Senator Akobundu Advocates for Infusion of Well-Trained Policemen into Nation’s Security Architecture

The Senator representing Abia Central at the National Assembly, Senator Austin Akobundu has canvassed for the strengthening of the nation’s security architecture with the infusion of more well-trained police officers and men into the Force as a way of ensuring that internal security duties are effectively executed which will in turn allow the military to focus on its primary responsibility of defending the nation’s territorial integrity.

The Senator said this while contributing to the debate on a bill to provide legal backing to 18 police training institutions earlier established through administrative directives.

While making his contribution to the bill, Senator Akobundu said, “(Some of) the roles being carried out by the military are purely police responsibilities and we need to infuse well-trained policemen into our security architecture so that the military will begin to pull back from internal security duties and face their primary responsibility of defending the territorial integrity of this nation.”

The Bill eventually passed its second reading.

It would be recalled that security experts have said that Nigeria’s military is currently overstretched as they have been heavily involved in internal security matters in recent years, saying if the trend is not properly addressed, it could impact negatively on their renowned ability to defend the nation’s territorial integrity.

If the Bill is passed into law, budgetary allocations would be made for the training institutions for men and officers of the Nigeria Police for a more effective policing of the nation.
