Five officers of the Nigeria Police Force died on Tuesday following a tragic road accident that occurred on the Zaria-Kano Road.0115

The News revealed that the security personnel were part of police officers deployed to Edo State Saturday’s governorship election.

An update on the incident, the spokesperson for the Kano State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), CRC Abdullahi Labaran, in a statement confirmed that the deceased officers were returning from the recent Edo State governorship election.

The accident took place early Tuesday morning at Karfi Village, near the Trailer Park along the Zaria-Kano Road.

“The crash, reported by the Kura Local Government Police Division, involved two vehicles – a trailer and a Toyota Hummer Bus with registration number 14B101KN belonging to Kano line.

“The accident, which took place at approximately 0115 hours, involved a total of fifteen individuals. Sadly, five lives were lost, and ten people sustained varying degrees of injuries.

“The victims were identified as members of the Nigeria Police Force returning from a special assignment in Edo State, where they had been deployed for election monitoring,” Labaran said.

Labaran stated that preliminary investigations conducted by the FRSC indicated that the accident resulted from excessive speeding, causing the driver of the Hummer bus to lose control and crash into a stationary trailer.

The Sector Commander, ACM Ahmed Tijjani Mohammed, expressed his sincere condolences to the Commissioner of Police in Kano State, the Nigeria Police Force, and the families affected by this tragedy.

Emphasizing the importance of compliance with traffic laws, CRC Labaran cautioned against excessive speeding, overloading, and other violations of traffic regulations.

A couple reportedly died in a tragic gas explosion that occurred recently in Abakiliki, the capital of Ebonyi State.

The spokesperson for Ebonyi State Police Command, DSP Joshua Ukandu, confirmed the tragic incident in a statement made available to newsmen in Abakiliki on Thursday.

According to him, the incident claimed the lives of a woman known only as Chioma and her spouse, George.

This revelation came after rumours had circulated suggesting that the couple perished due to an explosion caused by dynamite or an inverter battery.

Chioma passed away five days after the incident, while her husband died from his injuries inflicted during the explosion at the hospital on Wednesday.

The explosion was said to have occurred shortly after the couple settled into their new home in Abakiliki.

Ukandu said, “The preliminary report shows that it was a gas explosion that killed Chioma and not dynamite or battery, although further investigation is still on going.”

However, while the real identity of the late Chioma is not yet established, speculations are that the woman was a sister of Afrobeats singer, Patoranking.

A Nigerian nurse based in the UK has been jailed for three years after leaving her ten-week-old baby to go to work.

The convict, identified as Ruth Auta, 28, left her baby without a child-minder in her nurse’s accommodation for eight hours so she could work her shift on December 20, 2022

According to Mail Online, when she returned from work, she found her son lifeless in his cot and dialled 999, telling operators her son was not breathing.

The infant was pronounced dead an hour later, with tests showing he may have ‘overheated’ due to the layers of clothing and bedding he was wrapped in.

Auta initially told the police that she had collected Joshua from a child-minder after she finished work, took him back home, fed him, placed him on her bed, and then fell asleep next to him.

She claimed that when she woke up, she found him unresponsive.

Later in her police interview, Auta gave no comment to questions asked and was freed on bail pending further investigation.

However, Auta was charged after police found CCTV of her leaving and entering her accommodation without Joshua on the day of the tragedy.

Officers also discovered incriminating texts in which she urged her child-minder to say she was looking after Joshua that day.

The child-minder told officers she had not seen the infant for a number of days.

Auta was charged with cruelty to a child and pleaded guilty at Manchester Magistrates’ court on May 24, 2024, with her case adjourned by a month for sentence.

On June 6, the nurse who worked at Royal Bolton Hospital tried to flee the country. But was detained at Gatwick while attempting to board the flight to Nigeria, having purchased a one-way ticket.

Auta was sentenced to three years in jail when she appeared at Bolton Crown Court on 10 September.
