The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has cautioned the church to tread carefully in political matters, warning that it nearly made a grave error in 2023 that could have jeopardized Nigeria’s future. The minister made these remarks during a thanksgiving service at St. James’ Anglican Church, Asokoro, Abuja, held to celebrate the successful completion of projects commissioned by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Speaking at the event on Sunday, Wike urged church leaders to seek guidance from politicians within their congregations to better understand the political landscape. He emphasized the need for vigilance to avoid repeating what he described as a near-catastrophic mistake in 2023, which he claimed could have had severe consequences for the nation.
“Let me use this opportunity to tell us, particularly the church, you nearly made the worst mistake in 2023. We have to be very careful this time around,” Wike stated. “You took a decision that would have cost some of us our future. Ask us questions, we are the politicians.”
The minister further advised church leaders to consult with politically experienced members, such as senators, to gain clarity on current issues and avoid being swayed by misinformation or blackmail. “You have senators in this church, call on them, ask what is going on, and they would be able to educate you. Blackmail, they are at it again,” he added.
While Wike did not provide specific details about the 2023 mistake, his comments suggest a call for greater discernment in the church’s engagement with political decisions ahead of the 2027 elections. The minister’s remarks have sparked discussions among religious and political observers, with many anticipating further clarification on the issue.
The thanksgiving service, attended by several dignitaries, highlighted the FCT administration’s achievements under Wike’s leadership, with the minister reiterating his commitment to delivering on President Tinubu’s developmental agenda for the capital territory.
