The Edo State Police Command is investigating a fatal shooting incident that occurred on 10th May, 2026 at about 1700hrs around the University of Benin axis, Benin City.

Preliminary investigation reveals that three occupants of a Mercedes-Benz GLK vehicle namely; Onwuke Blessed ‘M’, Alexander Omogiate ‘M’, and Chinenye Christian Mbagwu ‘M’ were driving out of the University of Benin when an unidentified white GLK vehicle suddenly intercepted them at the University of Benin main campus gate, Ugbowo, lowered their glass and opened fire on the victims and escaped to unknown destination.

As a result of the attack, all occupants sustained various degrees of gunshot injuries including a female passerby identified as Dorathy Ubah.

Upon receipt of the report, Police operatives swiftly mobilized to the scene and the victims were immediately rushed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) for urgent medical attention. Sadly, Alexander Omogiate was confirmed dead by the medical doctor on duty, while other injured victims are responding to treatment.

The Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, CP Monday Agbonika, fdc, has ordered a full-scale investigation into the incident with a view to tracking down the fleeing perpetrators and bringing them to justice.

The Command sternly warns all criminal elements and hoodlums operating within the State especially the university campuses, to desist from acts of violence and criminality, as the Edo State Police Command remains resolute and unwavering in its commitment to rid the State of all forms of crime and criminality. The Command assures the public that no stone will be left unturned in bringing those responsible for this heinous act to justice.

The Command also appeals to members of the public with useful or credible information that can assist ongoing investigations to promptly report to the nearest Police Station or contact the Command through its emergency lines. All information provided will be treated with utmost confidentiality.

The Abia State Police Command has arrested the officers captured in a widely circulated social media video showing alleged misconduct at a checkpoint in Uturu.

In a statement issued on Sunday and signed by Police Public Relations Officer DSP Maureen Chinaka on behalf of Commissioner of Police Danladi Isa, the command said it swiftly launched an investigation after the video surfaced.

“The complainant was contacted, and the officers involved were identified, traced, and promptly arrested,” the statement read.

The Commissioner has directed that the officers be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for detailed investigation and appropriate administrative action. The command promised to update the public on the outcome of the probe.

CP Isa reiterated the command’s commitment to professionalism, discipline, and respect for citizens’ rights during lawful operations. He warned that “impunity and all forms of misconduct will not be tolerated,” in line with the Inspector-General of Police’s directive for a rights-respecting and citizen-friendly police force.

The viral video, which originated from Uturu and spread rapidly online, shows an officer at a checkpoint questioning a motorist about possessing three mobile phones. The commuter, who was recording the encounter, demanded to know why the officer was not wearing a name tag.

When another officer objected to being filmed, the first officer reportedly responded in Pidgin English: “Make you record am. I no dey fear” (You can record it. I’m not afraid). As the commuter threatened to report the matter to the Inspector-General of Police, the officer allegedly replied, “Oya, call am” (Go ahead, call him), after which a struggle reportedly broke out.

The Management of Federal Fire Service Zone J, led by their Zonal Controller, CF Iribom Kurutsi paid a courtesy visit to the Commissioner of Police, Abia State Command, CP Danladi Isa at the Command Headquarters Umuahia, on Thursday 10th October 2024.

The purpose of the visit was to familiarize and foster collaboration between the two agencies.
